Export a CSV from your bank and every transaction lands in the Inbox. The Inbox is not a folder — it is a state: a row sits there until you have said where it belongs, and then it is gone from the queue. Importing the same month twice does not double your year; dedupe runs before the rules do.

Most of it is nobody else’s business.
Personal is a Space with no participants. Assign a row to it and it is filed, counted in your reports, and visible to exactly one person — for good, not until a setting changes. Sharing is the deliberate act, and it happens one transaction at a time.
A row in a shared Space that you happen to have paid for in full is still shared. Visibility is what private means here, not who ends up carrying the amount.

Every row can tell you why it is there.
Rules are an ordered list of condition and action, run when a transaction arrives. Groceries file themselves. Every assignment carries where it came from — from the import, by a rule, or by hand — and a correction you made by hand is never overruled by a later rule run.
No inference, and nothing categorised on your behalf by a model that cannot be asked why. Nothing is deleted either: states recede, rows stay.

A household of two
Rent, groceries and the car come off one account and get split on a ratio you set once.
We stopped keeping a spreadsheet the week we started. The rent splits itself now, and the argument we used to have at the end of the month just does not happen.
A flatshare of five
One person pays the internet bill. Everyone owes a fifth of it, and the ledger already knows that.
Five people, one bill, and nobody has to be the person who chases everyone. I can point at the row and it says who owes what.
A weekend away
Six people on a trip, two of whom will never make an account, on an even split for the whole weekend.
Half the group never signed up for anything. They are still in the split, they still show up on the balance, and settling up took one message.
Just you
Most of a month is nobody else’s business. It is filed to Personal, counted in your reports, and shared with no one.
The part I did not expect is how much of it is private. Everything is in one place and almost none of it is visible to anybody else.
A one-off, with one person
A shared present or a repair bill, split once, without turning it into a standing arrangement.
It was one payment we were going halves on. I did not want a whole system for it, and I did not need one — it took about as long as sending a message about it would have.
